The fifth house is the house of children and creativity.  Bringing children into the world is a creative process.  Children are the result of play, love and romance.  The 5th house stands for play, entertainment, child-like nature, sports, recreation, and creative ideas and intelligence.  It stands for the love a partnerfeels for us.  The 5th house stands for gambling and speculation.  Are we lucky when we invest in the stock market or gamble at a casino?  The 5th house provides those answers for us.   While the 3rd house lets us know what artistic talents we have, the 5th house will reveal our hidden creative potential.  It has to do with art of paintings or drawings.

 It is the house of character in terms of integrity, humility, morals, wisdom, good deeds, selflessness, etc.  If a person has an afflicted 5th house with malefic planets placed there, the person is most likely of low moral character and does not value good actions or intentions.  With benefic planets placed there, however, moral character is very high and this may make a person humble, selfless, charitable and ethical. 

The 5th house also has to do with the mind and mental health.  With an afflicted 5th house and 5th lord, also check both Mercury (Budha) and Moon (Chandra).  If they all have serious afflictions then you can make the judgment that the person suffers from some mental illness.  The 5th house has to with spiritual techniques and past life credit (poorvapunya).  Whatever is indicated by the 5th house, whether good results or badresults, it is past life debt the person has to go through in this life.  It has to do with the deity one is attached to or has affinity for.  This house represents the stomach, abdomen, liver, pancreas, and pregnancies.
